Loss and Grief Counselling
‘Every ending is a new beginning…we can always start again’. Marianne Williamson

I have worked as a loss and grief counsellor for over 20 years. In that time, I have had the privilege of supporting many people in the midst of their grief. I have been a bereavement counsellor in hospice and palliative care services and have experienced first-hand the devastation and overwhelm experienced with such an enormous loss.

Often people think of loss and grief only in relation to the death of a loved one. However, my definition of loss is very broad. There are many other losses we mourn: the loss of a job, a long-held dream, our own health, a valued role we have had, moving home, moving to residential care, our last child moving out, or watching a loved one with dementia progress in their illness. All losses are painful, all need support and understanding.

I work from the perspective that each person is whole, individual and worthy of respect, care and a safe place to be listened to, so they can explore their grief in their own time and way. The grieving person is not broken, they do not need to be fixed. They are more than their loss; and time, care and support will help them reconnect to the core of who they are.
